Does anyone know if the brown skin discoloration that can occur with Venofer extravasation is permanent?
Our pharmacy doesn't know and all I see on literature is that it can occur.

There is no mention of Venofer being a vesicant medication in Gahart's Intravenous Medications. So "extravasation" would not be the right term. I have not found any other reports of this drug being associated with tissue destruction either, so leakage from the vein would be infiltration according to the INS Standards and those definitions. Also Gahart's book does not make any mention of the tissue discoloration, so can't answer your question. The pH of this drug is 10.5 to 11.1, so it should not be infused thorugh peripheral veins according to INS SOP. Upper level pH is 9 through PIV. Lynn

Note what is pasted from the package insert for Venofer. Injection Site Extravastion. I found this on the manufacturer's website. Sorry this didn't paste well. Just google venofer and look at the full prescribing information.
