Does INS or AVA have standards or recommendations on the number of vascular access nurses per available inpatient hospital beds? We are a small community hospital with 1 FT vascular access nurse for 142 available inpatient beds.
How many vascular access nurses do other hospitals have with compareable inpatient beds? Thank you.
I know that INS does not have anything related to this and I have not seen anything from AVA either. Teams are not staffed based on the number of hospital beds. The scope of service varies greatly among teams. Some have 24/7/365 full service doing all insertion and management of all VADs while others have a limited scope of inserting only PICCs and midlines in a limited number of hours and/or days of the week. Rather than looking at beds, first consider the number of services your team plans to provide, the hours per day and days per week your team will operate and the time it will take to accomplish the volume of work you plan to provide.
