Regarding SvCo2 and lactate levels;
#1 Does any one see why a lactate level COULD NOT be drawn from a Central line; PICC/PORT/ or physician inserted Central line?
I did some searching and see where it has been done arterially but now mostly venous. I read mention of not having tourniquet on site too long etc..... but dont see at all why if they have a central line that could not be drawn from there since it is a venous specimen. The staff in ICU is wondering because verbage in policy says "peripheral lactic acid level". I am just wondering if it is just worded that way or if there is evidence behind the specific use of a peripheral stick versus draw from central line?
#2 ; are any of you utilizing a PICC line to draw periodic SVCO2 s? I once again do not see why they could not be drawn as the tip of the PICC line resides at the desired location of caval atrial junction just as a MD inserted line. I realize the Central lines with the Vigilao (sp) can give a continuous reading of SVc02, but... if the Dr doesnt want to place one and a PICC is used and they felt the need to periodically check this it should be feasible to get this level from this as well right?
Thank you
I checked a lab reference book in my office from 2006 and neither of those tests are listed in the book. Could they be listed by another name? Lynn

Gina, go to scholar.google.com and search for "drawing blood sample for lactic acid". My search produced over 3700 hits. You might find something in those articles.
Using regular Google, I did see what you were referring to with the tourniquets increasing the levels, but nothing about drawing from a CVC.
Using scholar.google.com brings up the published scientific literature only. Lynn
