Use of Solo PICC

Our facility is 710+ beds and is currently using the Bard Power PICC - On September 1st, 2012 we went heparin-free. The numbers of clotted catheters that required Cathflo/Alteplase increased as we expected at first, and then increased even more, unexpectedly! Orders for the flushing (NS every 6 hours & prn are placed in the chart at the time of insertion). Our group is considering a change from the Bard Power PICC to the Solo in an attempt to reduce these issues. I am interested in facilities that currently use the Solo. For those of you that keep this data:

What were the number of Solo PICCs placed for the months of September-November & December?

What were the number of reported declots for each of those months?

What were the number of actual lines that required the use of Cathflo or other solution for each month?

What has your overall experience been with using this product for your patient population? Any concerns or thoughts would be appreciated.

If you would like to reply to my personal email is [email protected].

Thanks!

maxplus

Hi, I am curious if you have been using the maxplus cap on all of your IVs, etc prior to the heparin free date?   I had a simular problem since we had previously used a negative displacement cap.  The nurses were still flushing and clamping the maxplus with a negative displacement technique instead of the positive displacement tech.

Just a thought.

thanks in advance! :)

David, thanks for your

David, thanks for your thoughts. Yes the Maxplus Cap was in use and staff were educated (ongoing) prior to use >1 year ago. Are you using the Solo catheter?

1Q2012: 18.1/1000 PICC days

2Q2012: 19.4/1000 PICC days

3Q2012: 4.8/1000 PICC days

Thanks for the information.

Thanks for the information. Would you mind sharing the number of PICCs placed each quarter and where your facility is located (how many beds, do you have a designated PICC team, do you perform the declots or evaluate them prior to declotting, what type of cap are you using, etc.? My email is [email protected]. Thanks!
