We are starting to do more and more PIV insertions using the ultrasound. Wondering what other hospitals are using for a probe cover? We are using a tegaderm but it doesn't always work the best. Taking suggestions!!!
We use a 48" probe cover and sterile gel. Could probably easily get by with a 24" probe cover, but not stocked by our facility. You should probably get Infection Prevention's input for your facility. We had to, to get the system to agree to a probe cover and the cost of sterile gel.
Any sterile cover can be used. A TSM for this purpose must be large enough to cover the probe but it would never be large enough to cover the entire probe so it could prevent sterile technique when you are holding the probe. Are you trying to do a completely sterile insertion procedure? Or are you just trying to prevent the contact between the probe and actual catheter at the puncture site? I would get the input from your IP. There is a growing concern about PIV-associated BSI, so a greater emphasis on a sterile procedure. Lynn
We use the same probe cover kit as with our PICC line insertions (~147cm). I agree that you could not do a sterile insertion with even a larger tegaderm.
There was a new product at AVA this year that is to be released in January - it is amazin for USPIV. I am unsure if Lynn will let us state product information on her site but would be happy to share with you via email.
This is not my site, so not my decision. I am just a loud mouth on here a lot! Ask Kevin Arnold about the policy for using and endorsing products. Lynn
