We are rolling out smart pumps in our facility, and have been asked many questions about what to do with mixing medications. We give a lot fo premeds for our chemotherapy, and have often mix them in a single minibag.
Pharmacy does not want to add the mixtures in our dataset of medications that we give, so the staff are questioning how to program in the pump, when only one drug will show on the pump.
I have issues with this, because if one drug only is showing, I'm concerned that an error may occur because the nurse wouldn't look at the bag to see what is actually infusion.
Have other facilities seen this issue? How is it addressed?
