Hi, I have been having several PICC pts transfer to a LTAC or the like. I would like to know what those of you that collect data do. Do you try to follow up with the transfer facility and keep tracking or do you stop and consider the PICC discontinued at discharge for your number of cath days, etc???
thanks!!!
Hi David,
That is a good question. We take the stance that once the patient has left the facility we no longer have control of that line thus ending the catheter days. I suppose if the patient returned with a CLABSI (or other complication) a few days after discharge we would have to look at that.
I hope that helps.

thank you.
It's my job at our facility to collect the numbers for IC. We only count fron insertion date or admission date if pt. has indwelling line/port. stop on date pt. is discharged, we do not follow. If pt. is re-admitted with line, we again start only from admission date (though we certainly keep aware of the actual insertion date). ID said this is how they want the data.
