Hi all,
Is it a common practice to backprime between secondary infusions to minimize connecting and disconnecting tubings?
Does the solution of choice have to be NS, or the primary solution that is hanging is permissible (as long as it is compatible with the secondary medication)
Thank you in advance
Janna
Yes backpriming is the preferred method since connecting and disconnecting sets add risk for infection. Compatibility between the piggybacked med and the primary fluid is the only criteria for the carrier fluid. There is no standard for a specific fluid. If a compatible fluid is infusing, there is no need for addtional saline.
