Hi,
Looking for research or antidoctal evidence regarding safe administration of incompatible infusates through dual lumen short peripheral catheters.
I am currently evaluating dual lumen short peripheral IV cathteters for patients receiving continuous infusions of incompatible medications (PCA/pantoprozole/heparin) but also need intermittent or other continuous infusions. In my experience I have never encountered this type of product but think it's novel. Wondering why there are not more dual lumen SPCs in place. Is it money (cost of catheter) or unsafe?
I did some searches in my institution's OVID library couldn't find anything specific.
Regards,
Kate Rider
To my knowledge there is only one brand of dual lumen short PIV on the market. This one is about 30 years old and has never had any published research supporting its use. I have not seen anything on dual lumen PIVs in many, many years. Peipheral vein diameter and blood flow probably not suficient to prevent contact at the lumen exits. Lynn
