My team has always had our patient in a private room to insert a PICC line, even if it meant taking them to another department. Is this a practice that others do?? A team covering for us does not do that and I am being asked by staff if the rearranging is necessary.
Private room is certainly not required by any standards or guidelines from any organization. The question then becomes can you meet the standard as outlined in the INS Standards on Vascular Access Site Preparation and Device Placement in a semiprivate room. These are all configured differently. Can you limit intrusions, control traffic flow, move furniture to create your sterile field, max barriers, etc. I am not aware of any document that sets any guidelines for the actual setting for any CVAD insertion. Some hospitals do it at patient bedside; others take all patients to a treatment room; others go to radiology (yes that is old practice but still done in some places). Lynn
