Hey Everyone!
My first post! My question does anyone look at different lab works prior to insertion. In our facility, we look at PT/INR, Platelets and BUN/ Creatinine (eGFR). If yes, what are your parameters? I know that the eGFR should be discussed with a Nephrologist prior to PICC insertion. Is there any studies or meta-analysis I can cite? I love Dr. Chopra's MAGIC criterion but as from what I've read here we have different protocols for this. Thank you!

K-DOQI Guidelines from the National Kidney Foundation is the guidance document on patients with actual or impending renal failure. I am not aware of any systematic literature review on this question though. A PICC is considered to be much safer when it comes to elevated PT/INR, and APPT, or low platelets because you can apply direct pressure if bleeding occurs. Lynn

we do review all labs ahead of time; not that they have a pass or fail value but...helps us make safe decisions.....ie bleeding issues....stay away from multiple sticks.. skin nick cautiously,... avoid arterial are etc....maybe postpone if crazy high till normal..... look at cbc etc.....risk of already experiencing infection.... bun cr renal issues....do we need to get ok from dr.......that kind of stuff.....not that they stop us but they help us make a critical judgment
