I was wondering what the standard of practice is regarding the removal of portacaths. We have always had them removed in the OR, but some of our new surgeons are wanting to do them at bedside. According to the INS guidelines it says it is a surgical procedure, but does not state it must be done in the OR. Many procedures are done at bedside i.e. pleural taps, I and D's etc.
Any help would be appreciated, if you know of any literature please forward.
