Policies and Procedures

Would be interested to hear if anyone has used a published policy and procedure manual for their own policies and procedures, i.e. central line dressing change policy written as "Refer to Mosbys policy & procedure #___" or "Refer to INS P&P _____". Would like to hear pros and cons. I have used the examples given as references before, but wrote a policy and procedure specific to the care setting I was in.  If anyone has investigated this or done this, would be interested in your feedback if you would be willing to contact me directly at [email protected]

I have seen this done both

I have seen this done both ways from a consulting standpoint. My advise is to first investigate the specific resource you want to use in this manner and their rules for how to use it. All these books are copyrighted materials, so that restricts how you can use them. Instead of purchasing one copy, you might need to purchase a licensing agreement so you can share this with multiple locations in your company. You would also need to make sure that each resource had what you needed. Many time the procedure books do not contain policies as those authors can not determine what the policy (think rules) for your organization should be. Then see if the resource meets the national standards from INS, ONS, CDC, SHEA, ASPEN, etc. Good luck, Lynn

I've had to use one

A facility I worked in used Lippincott. I had a love/hate relationship with it. Those are good for structuring the policy that needs to be written but I didn't feel were up to date enough for us. (for instance, it had great detail about how to chevron tape an IV in place) Fortunately, the version we had we were able to hyperlink and make revisions that suited our facility. It was suboptimal but hey! I didn't have to write it from scratch so it wasn't all bad.
