I cannot recall any studies that address this question directly. So it would be based on the inserters decision making after thorogh assessment. Why is a PIVC needed if the proper assessment of prescribed therapy was done before the PICC was inserted? If multiple lumens are needed, why was a multiple lumen PICC not inserted? What are the options for insertion on the opposite arm? Your decision is based on the least risk vs the greatest benefit.
