PIV direction

Hello, I recently had a Nurse Practitioner that placed an IV towards the hand.  When questioned she wanted policy that stated PIV needed to be in the direction of venous blood flow as she was taught that it does not matter what direction they face.  I do not have policy however looking for literature to support

I would strongly advise you

I would strongly advise you to not fall into her trap. The NP is the one practicing outside the norm. She is wanting to change practices, therefore it is her responsibiity to prove to you that she is correct. I am not aware of any studies on this issue. YOu would be infusing, usually on a pump, against the natural flow of blood. Plus the difficulty in sticking in that direction is crazy. I would tell her to find evidence to support her position.
