I place PICCs in a hospital setting in Central California. Has the practice of PICC insertion moved from a procedure traditionally found in the medical practice arena and covered by a standardized procedure to that of common nursing procedures/task (such as starting peripheral IVs)? Any information, experiences, or comments are appreciated. Karen
..PICC insertion in the state of Ca is now considered a common procedure or in other words you do not need to have it in a standardized procedure format and meet those specific requirements. This changed many yrs ago and I did check with our legal dept as well as the Ca BRN. You will still need a PICC procedure in place and each PICC nurse must have current competencies on file.
