Has anyone observed phlebotomists utilizing U/S for routine lab draws ? Is anyone aware of any institutions considering or have implimented this practice ?
I am not aware of phlebotomist using US but I do know they are using near infrared light devices for the same purpose of finding veins in difficult patients. Lynn
"Legal guidelines"? There are guidelines and standards such as the Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice that now includes paramedics and technologists. Then there are documents, usually at the state level, that identify the legal boundaries of the scope of practice for each type of professional. Every person must practice within those legal boundaries for their profession. So you will need to check with the body/board that governs practice in your state for paramedics. The same goes for other technologists such as those in radiology. If there is no specific agency in your state for the specific professional you are asking about, then you would go to their professional organization such as ASRT for rad techs. Lynn
I use ultrasound on the difficult access patients in my hospital for blood draws and am actively seeking funding to train our phlebotomists as well as our respiratory therapists on this method to draw blood both venous and arterial.
Our phlebotomists were trained over a year ago to ultlize US for difficult sticks. We have had great success partnering with them to meet our patients' access needs.
We are a robust team of 2 PICC nurses covering 400+ acute care beds. We are also called to use ultrasound to assist with difficult IV insertions and blood draws in acute care as well in outpatient CT scan. The hospital is now developing a phlebotomy team and we have been very vocal about them getting an ultrsound. I think it may happen.
