PCA med hang time

We're trying to find information on hang time for PCA syringes/bags for both IV and epidural infusions.  Anybody have recommended intervals for changing the medication container--every 24, 48, 72, 96 hours?  Is it different for epidural and IV?  We are in the hospital setting.

Thanks, Maria

INS Standards of Practice

INS Standards of Practice #68 - 24 hours for all parenteral meds and solutions after adding the admin set. There is also criteria listed for extending beyond 24 hours on page S74 of that document. Same for all infusion sites.

the newer pharmacy regulations - 797 discuss such an issue - some of it relates to maintaining sterility and stability of the product - whether your pharmacy is mixing the drug/ is it a purchased cartridge type product = where the manufacturer may have guidelines.

maybe  your pharmacists have insight here.
