Currently PCAs are connected to the hub of the catheter or at the distal y-site of a compatbile primary solution. Compatible antibiotics may be piggybacked onto the primary solution set.
By policy Fentenyl PCA must have a dedicated line (ordered very infrequently and dedication due to inadvertent bolus of drug). It has just been discussed to have all PCAs have a carrier solution. Now, the practice of allowing compatible antibiotics is in question.
My thought is if everything is compatible why shouldn't we be able to administer an antibiotic, IVF, and PCA? I'm thinking vein preservation.
First, are you allowing other meds to be infused along with a PCA?
Second, should Fentenyl have its own dedicated IV?
