midlines and tPA

Now that the use of new midlines designed for blood draws are people using tPA when unable to continue to draw labs?
Thanks

 Please share which midline

Please share which midline is designed for blood draws. There are no studies, or even mention of drawing blood from midlines in a simple descriptive study. Curious to what this new design is about. Thanks Lynn

There are actually two

There are actually two midlines at least on the market that vendors state are capable for blood draws. Bard makes one and also Angiodynamics.

 But no clinical data

But no clinical data published on this. I am at INS conference now and hearing lots of comments about lack of blood return on midlines. Sounds like taking samples may be challenging.

We were told (by the vendor

We were told (by the vendor of course) that the Angiodynamic Bioflow Midline was "designed for blood draws" for "no more than 30 days. I placed one yesterday and it already does not have any blood return.

Midline blood draws

Bard manufactures a "midline" called the Powerglide. It is not reliable for blood sampling but Angiodynamics make a single lumen & double lumen midline that makes drawing labs more dependable.

midlines

Our ID docs are ordering more midlines than PICCs recently. Are there any evidence based studies on the use of midlines? We need to refine our unit policy to include referenced information on midlines. Currently we have only a general dressing care and flushing routine in the policy.
Thanks,
Pat

 Our CE course on midlines

Our CE course on midlines contains evidence tables including all studies on midlines divided by type of midline plus a complete reference list. Go to website listed below. Lynn

blood return

Our facility has been using the BARD Powerglides for a little over 2 years now. We have been very successful with blood draws when utilizing the 18g catheters. We did have some issues in the beginning, however, and we have been actively providing education and tip sheets to the nurses and have greatly increased our success rate. It seems to be a patience thing here. The nurses expect them to act as PICC lines, no matter how many times we explain the difference. They also neglect to place the tourniquet correctly on the arm or not at all.  Many times we have been called because the Midline "doesn't work"  and when we assess the patient, and place the tourniquet at the axilla with the patient resting their arm below the level of the heart we more often than not have positive blood return.
