maximum barrier precautions for the assistant?

Can anyone cite a reference that details what PPE the assistant to the PICC inserter should be wearing in a bedside procedure?  We are merging policy and I do not believe that the assistant needs to wear sterile gloves and a sterile gown for a picc line  or cvc insertion (unless it is isolation PPE, non-sterile).

Thanks.

It would depend on what that

It would depend on what that assistant is actually doing during the procedure. For instance, do they have any tasks involving holding the sterile US probe, passing sterile supplies to the inserter, etc? Are they strictly there to address patient needs, positioning, anxiety, move equipment in the room?

They are really an observer.

They are really an observer.  The policy we are looking at asks for cap, mask, sterile gown and gloves if the asistant comes within 3 feet of the patient.  I just wondered if anyone else was dressing their assistants and observers differently?
