IV tubing change

Our hospital has a policy in place to change IV tubing every 96 hours for continuous fluids and 24 hours for intermittent infusions.  Is anyone aware of information leading to the position that IV tubing should be changed when switching from a PIV to a CVAD regardless of the length of time the IV tubing has been hanging?  Appreciate all the help!

Yes. The national standard of practice from INS states that all administration sets, needleless connectors, extension sets, the entire system is to be changed when you insert a new VAD, both peripheral and central. You cannot take a used set and connect it to a new catheter no matter how long it has been used.

Go the the INS website and purchase from the webstore. www.ins1.org. All policies should be written in accordance with this document. It is the first document used by experts in a lawsuit to assess your practices.
