Hypodermoclysis

I was alerted this AM as to the New 2016 standard on this modality, page S122 Practice criteria A which says the solutions to be used are isotonic solutions, 0.9% Sodium Chloride AND D5W???? D5W has always been discouraged due to its Hypotonic nature. Lyn, since you were on the committee which drafted and wrote the standards, can you explain what I am missing?

 The osmolarity of 5%

The osmolarity of 5% dextrose in water is around 270. Depending on which reference you use, solutions less that 250 or 275 is considered to be hypotonic. So D5W has a low osmolarity but may not be considered hypotonic. I would suggest you do a literature seaerch on fluids used for SC infusion. Many recent references include various solutions including saline, dextrose and combinations of those for SC infusion. Lynn
