How do you receive referrals for PIV starts?
I'm  new to this listserv, and I'm looking for new and improved ways for my IV team to obtain referrals from floor nurses for PIV starts.  We are still getting them the old fashioned way -- they page us and we call them back.  There has to be a better way.  Are any of you using CPOE, faxes, cell phones.  I'm looking for anything that could improve our current process and that won't necessarily generate additional paperwork.  Thanks!

We use the spectralink phone
We use the spectralink phone system within the hospital.  I do PICC lines primarily, but occasionally a doctor or bedside RN will call me for a dificult PIV placement.  They've got my number!!!

At our institution the floor nurses call an answering service, which in turn pages us on alpha pagers with room#, pt's name, request, and nurse's name.

If your hospital has TEXT

If your hospital has TEXT pager system throught the computer, set it up and anyone can text page you once they know how to use it. Then you would log in the requests and be on your merry way, no need to call back.

Personally I want to talk to
Personally I want to talk to the R.N. requesting the I.V. I not only want the name and room number but what is the Pt. receiving, when is it due, are they in pain, how many times has the Pt. been stuck already, how long has the I.V. been out, etc..... I cover many areas (PICC problems too) and need to be able to prioritize who comes first. The conversation also allows me to assess the educational needs of the R.N.  Name and room number is not enough information.
