History of DVT from previous PICC, how long to wait before next PICC placement
If a patient has a PICC pulled because of DVT, it that extremity ever to be used again for PICC placement? Are there standards to say that you should wait a certain amount of time, or never use it again? Any thoughts
No standards on such a time frame that I'm aware of,but could be wrong. Some things I'd consider would be the possibility of getting an ultrasound workup of the arm and deep veins to make sure the clot has resolved. I would also look into why the DVT might have developed in the first place and consider the patient at higher risk for developing another PICC-related DVT when weighing the risks/benefits of placing another.
