We are currently updating our policy/references concerning all central line care. One of the hot topics is heparin lock vs. saline lock for short term CVCs. From our research it appears that both are equally accepted at this point and most of the literature says follow the manufacturer recommendations. Then we find that the manufacturer has very little information available as to what is recommended. Here are our questions:
1. How does your facility manage the open ended CVCs: Heparin lock or saline lock?
2. If the lock is saline only, how often and what amounts are used?
Thank you,
Pam Weber RN, BSN, VA-BC
Whether you use heparin 10 units per mL or normal saline should be determined by the needleless connector added to the hub or all intermittently used VADs. Flushing and locking technique along with correct sequence for disconnection and clamping are more important that solution. See many articles on types of needleless connectors and the appropriate sequence of disconnect and clamping. Lynn
