giving chemo in the outpatient setting

Greetings!

Has anyone heard of outpatient oncology clinics giving chemo through PICC lines where the tip location, external length is not documented?

Are the patients taught how to maintain the lines with qd or BID flushes?

Thank You Very Much!!

I am sure it happens when the nurses administering the chemo does not understand the standards of practice. But everyone should be aware of what those standards are. What a patient is taught depends upon what the home care company teaches them and this also varies across the country. Again, it depends upon whether the nurses understand the standard of practice.
