AACN has posted a practice standard that calls for allowing family presence during bedside invasive procedures. We currently do not allow family at the bedside while doing PICC insertions. Anyone have opinions on this? I am a member of AVA and AACN.

I often have family at the bedside when I am inserting a PICC. Usually they were there for the teaching and consent part, and have asked to stay. They wear a mask, and are asked to stay in their chairs. I occasionally have a patient that is restless, and the family member will sometimes sit at the patient's head (on the other side of the bed from me) and we'll cover both the patient and the family member with the drape.
I do screen the family members. If the patient prefers them not to be there, if they look like they will not be able to stay in one place, and if they are children I will ask them to leave. I let them know that it is to help maintain the sterile field and protect the patient, and have so far had no problems either with the family in the room or out of it.
