Is there evidence to support drawing labs from PIVs routinely? This question has come up frequently as we rarely will use a PIV for obtaining labs from someone who is difficult access. The INS Standard list specific situations for using a PIV to obtain labs such as in peds patients, adults with difficult acces, presence of bleeding disorders, and the need for serial testing. The standard also contains a comment indicating that sampling of lbood from indwelling short peripheral catheters is reliable for many routine blood tests. Can anyone share evidence to support routinely drawing labs from PIVs?
I just did a literature search on this issue and there are numerous studies. Hemolysis is an issue but there are so many factors that causes hemolysis. I am doing a presentation on this issue in Orlando this weekend. Please visit our website to learn more about our services for evidence based practice information. www.hadawayassociates.com
