Currently when we place picc lines we don’t Include our vein measurement or the circumference of the arm in our documentation. I am curious know if others do this routinely and what else do you include , ie compressibility of vein etc... also what percentage of the vein is considered ok when choosing the size catheter, 33% or 45%? i would appreciate all responses, thank you.
Please see the INS Standard on Documentation. It does include external and internal catheter length, baseline arm circumference, and VAD planning and site selection methods including all equipment used. Plus much more in the standard. RE catheter to vein ratio the 2016 SOP stated 45% which was the evidence based information at the time of their writing. I cannot quote studies but I believe there are more recnet studies using 33%. The SOP will be released again in 2021 but you can easily apply the more recent studies now.
