deny unwanted access to picc port / lock device

Has anyone used or know of a devcie that will lock a PICC port from use? ... for the IV drug user scenario. I've seen a patent online for one device such as this but not sure if anything has been produced.

Thanks,

To my knowledge, no device is commerically available. I know some are working on it, but not yet available.

Mickey Hawes will be sharing with our AVA network about caring for the IVDU patient, I'm sure this will be a part of the conversation.  I've shared before how we used parafilm to cover our needleless connectors.  It won't stop anyone from access, but it can't be re-applied so we could tell if the device had been used.  Then the question becomes what to do about it?

Thank you for the feedback. I

Thank you for the feedback. I think the hospital asking me wants to have either a full proof method to prevent use or they will not send the patient out of the facility. I will pass this tip along though. thanks,

Just be aware though, that

Just be aware though, that being in a facility will not prevent from someone from using their CVAD if they want to. There are hospitals in Canada that use something that can show the device has been tampered with and then comes the discussion. A contract can be written with the patient that outlines the risks of using their CVAD for non prescribed therapy.

2 needleless connectors?? Do

2 needleless connectors?? Do you mean 2 lumens? I think you would have one of these boxes on each lumen. I can not think of any valid reason to have 2 needleless connectors on a single hub. Lynn

I was referring to the video.

I was referring to the video... they had 2 connectors hooked up.. one piggybacked on the other. Just curious... seems like the enclosure is longer than it really needs to be. Nice design concept though.

I saw that too

I didn't examine it too closely but yes it did look like that.  It is a work in progress, Mickey has actually used it so she would be the one to ask.
