Deaccessing implanted ports

I am interested in the listservers' opinions on whether deaccessing an implanted port should be a sterile or clean procedure. I work in an outpatient haem/onc clinic and all our CVADs have closed systems so logically ot me flushing the lines and deaccessing can be done using a clean no-touch technique. Any suggestions or sources of information to guide us? Thanks

There are no studies on the disinfectant agent or the technique for cleaning any injection port. The INS standards of practice state that sterile technique shall be used when accessing an implanted port, but there are no statements about de-accessing. I have always used clean technique for removal of a port needle. Lynn
