It is coming up again at our facility questions about consent forms for PICC'S. As of now I ask the patient if the Physician has explained to them about the PICC line, then I explain the procedure and proper care of line. If any questions or patient unable to understand I must have a written consent first. Otherwise I document Verbal consent. My understanding is most people do this. What is the standard for sure? I know nurses are not allowed to obtain informed consent only witness a signature. Can I have input as to how everyone else is handling this situation.
thanks
Lisa
Although there may be states laws or rules/regulations in individual states about informed consent, the basic principal is that the person performing the procedure should be the one to educate and obtain this consent, including getting the signature on the piece of paper. So yes, nurses can and do perform this procedure. Check new INS standards which are now in the mail to INS members. Lynn

Our picc RNs obtain the consent.
There is A LOT of information out there on what should be included in an adquate consent form. You should research it for your own knowledge, but I would advise getting with your legal department or risk manager..........
