Cochrane systematic review: Dressing and securement for central venous access devices (CVADs)

 Hi,

Has anyone come across and had a chance to review the recently published Cochrane systematic review: Dressing and securement for central venous access devices (Published April 2016)?? This document concludes the following:

- There is high quality evidence that medication-impregnated dressings reduce the incidence of CVAD-related bloodstream infection relative to all other dressing types.

Do any institutions use medication impregnated dressings instead of the standard polyurethane dressings for central venous catheters? Which product? Have you seen any improvements in CLABSI? Do you feel INS may change their standards after a study like this?

Thank you

 This study is about

This study is about chlorhexidine dressings and catheter securement. These dressings are already addressed in the INS Standards, #41, page S82. It states to use CHG dressings when the risk of CLABSI is greatest from the skin as the source. This standard was just released in Jan 2016. This document is revised and released every 5 years. The next edition will be released in Jan 2021, but there are no revisions done in between. This document requires at least 3 years to research, write, review, and publish. All nurses should be keeping up with and applying new studies as they come out though. Lynn
