One of our pediatric patients is highly sensitive and allergic to chloraprep and even biopatch. Mother also dislikes using Betadine and alcohol. She mentioned Exsept Plus and was asking if it's ok for her to use it on her 17 month old baby. Has anyone heard about this product and would you recommend it?
Yes, I have heard of this product. First, is it avaialble for purchase in the USA. I looked at this many years ago and it was not avaialble here. I cannot see the name of the generic agent and don't remember it from years ago. I don't think there are any studies on this product for VAD site preparation of maintenance. So no way to know if it should be recommended or not. I know CDC has never included it in their guidelines. If you could find the generic name you might be able to find studies from other countries. Thanks for the prompt response and information. Truly appreciate it!
isn't that Dakin's Solution? A wound care specialist could provide some insight here, I believe it's basically a weak bleach used for infected wounds.
I did find the generic name. It is sodium hypochlorite, so yes a chlorine solution. Go to my website http://hadawayassociates.com/explore.html
Scroll down on this page to find an article on Hub Disinfection published in JVAD many years ago. It includes information about chlorine based solutions. I think I found the ExSept solution when writing this article. It is old, from 2001, but have not looked for any newer. Lynn
