Does anyone have any published research showing a reduction of CLABSI using Chorhexidine baths? The indication is to reduce MDROs but many hospitals use baths to help reduce CLABSI. Looking for published evidence to support this practice.

Yes, there is published research to support using CHG for bathing ICU patients. In the 2014 SHEA Compendium on CLABSI, this moved from a from a special approaches recommendation to a basic recommendation. To download this set of guidelines, go to http://www.shea-online.org/PriorityTopics/CompendiumofStrategiestoPreven.... Then check the references for this statement. Lynn

What is the evidence for daily chlorhexidine bath/shower with a central line to decrease CLABSI?
This is being done at my clinical site, it does not make sense to me. I do not believe the dressing is changed after bath/shower and the dressing I have not seen get covered prior to bath/shower. Thank you for your response.
Download and read the document I put in my other post. The references listed will answer your question. Lynn

In the 2014 Shea/IDSA update, yes, bathing in ICU is listed as a basic practice (which our facility does). When addressing my question of "outside" ICU the update states "The role of chlorhexidine bathing in non-ICU patients remains to be determined".
Our infection control practitioners do not feel that CHG bathing outside of the ICU is warranted as our patients encuring line infection organisms (outside of ICU) have NOT been MDROs.
Our numbers are below the benchmark for the state but I'm just trying to think of what more we can be doing and was asking for evidence supporting "outside of ICU r/t CLABSI prevention".
A recent study published in JAMA did not support chlorahexidine bathing. Therefore- we nix'ed the idea.

With this recommendation in place, I have been looking for a product that can be used without going off label. Does anyone know of any products other than the Sage?
