Capping of peripheral IV's.

How often do you cap peripheral IV's?  Every 8 hours? Twice daily?  or what? INS says do what your organization says, and the manufactor of the Y angio does not specify.  This is using normal flush.

Any catheter used for

Any catheter used for intermittent infusion must have a needleless connector placed on the end and it should remain closed for the entire time the catheter is in place. The needleless connector should be changed every 72 to 96 hours, the same frequency as your continuous administration sets. So I am a little lost by your question. Do you mean frequency of flushing and locking for a peripheral catheter? Are you looking at the 2011 Infusion Standards of Practice? Lynn

To clarify above

To clarify above question--How often do you flush peripheral IV's when not in use i.e. tele monitoring, etc. ?

Now I understand. There are

Now I understand. There are no studies that have looked at this. Most do it twice a day with normal saline. I would also assess the need for this catheter on a daily basis and get it out as soon as it is no longer medically necessary. Lynn
