blood culture collection

Do we need to waste any blood when we are collecting blood c/s with a new stick?

From a peripheral stick, you

From a peripheral stick, you need to divert the first 1.5 to 2 mL of blood. You can do this with a special device that does it automatically or discard this initial amount. This is to make sure you don't contaminate the sample with skin flora or a plug of skin. For ALL CVADS, do NOT waste anything. Always send the very first amount of blood without diversion or discarding anything. You always need to collect the planktonic organisms inside the CVAD lumen.
