Bedside picc insertions

We have been challenged on how long it takes us to insert a picc at bedside. We discussed the assessment, patient education, including informed consent, procedure, complications during and post insertion etc. , but were told the whole procedure from start to finish could be accomplished in an hour or less. Any conversation or references would be greatly appreciated. We didn't realize that this was a race.

 Have you actually documented

Have you actually documented the time it is now taking for your insertions? Or are you just relying on memory for the procedure. First, you definitely need hard data on your actual time so you can talk in real terms. As already stated, there will be wait times, but that should not be counted as time in the procedure being timed since you can move on to do other tasks while waiting. Also if you are timing the insertion procedure, don't include time for post insertion complication management as that is a different issue. For time to wait on xray, point out this depends on workload in Radiology and the elimination of this period with ECG tip location. I would also look at why this has become an issue. Who is behind raising this as an issue and why are they doing it? What are they trying to prove? Lynn
