Is there literature/evidence-based practice to support back priming of secondary medications? I believe that Lynn Hadaway wrote an article in 2004 which was in the Nursing 2004 issue titled "IV Rounds: Delivering multiple medications vai back-priming". Does anyone know if this included evidence based studies?
I have never seen any evidence based studies so my article from many years ago was simply a practice review. See INS SOP Administration Set Change. Reference for using backpriming is based on my textbook chapter. Evidence for this practice is derived from manufacturer's instructions for use along with the principle of reducing IV administration system manipulation to reduce the possibility of contamination.
