Is there any recommendations to use a antimicrobial patch under a port access. We currently do not use one but wasn't sure if there was a recommendation to use it. We use silvasorb as our antimicrobial patch.
Any silver dressing is also antimicrobilal, so you are using an antimicrobial dressing. However, there is no evidence to support using any silver product on any CVAD. There is evidence using CHG dressing on percutaneous CVADs. Use on an implanted port depends upon the patient, the setting and the specific risk factors from each. Implanted ports have the lowest rates of CRBSI of all CVADs. CHG dressing will only address extraluminal causes of CRBSI, which are prevalent in the first 7 to 10 days of dwell. So these dressings on implanted ports may not provide much benefit. Lynn
