amiodarone

I just found out something new. My mom who had a few episodes very brief of afib was put on Amiodarone. She had horrible reactions to this very toxic drug. It literally is off label use and has black box warnings for use for afib. I never knew that it had its own facebook page on patient experiences with its off label use. After 8 doses she had Parkinson like symptoms, lost her gait, lost her spatial abilities, had issues with her kidneys and clearance, had delirium and hallucinations, muscle weakness and bronchiolitis. This drug has been associated with pulmonary fibrosis and hyper and hypothyroidism. All adverse reactions listed in the drug warnings. Did you know this drug stays in your system for six months by the way as that is its half life. Lesson learned know your drugs well. She is off of it for a month now but we are still seeing some of the effects. Her frail body could not handle this toxic drug. I posted this as just information to off label and adverse events. Very interesting drug. It has a high iodine concentration.

Hi Kathy!

Hi Kathy!

I was aware of the pulmonary fibrosis thing but not the other symptoms. Your poor mom.

I've questioned the off label use of this drug and was told that it is a first line drug for treating Afib by the American Heart Association.  I have not verified this myself.

All I really know is that this drug is a vein's worst nightmare. Some of the most extreme thrombophlebitis I've ever seen, but it continues to be given peripherally.  I'm surprised there aren't more attorney ads on TV for this drug.

I'm off to check out the facebook page. Thanks for the heads up on that.

Wishing your mom a full recovery from her symptoms.

Hey it's Kathy!

Hi there, sure miss seeing your name in print!

Did they run a small test bag first?  I remember running a test dose, then a 24 hour infusion then give orally.

Sorry about your mom.  Take good care of her.

test bag

No they did not do a test bag but I did take her off after four days. Too many complications and now we are 7 weeks post last dose.
