My hospital has me directing a project exploring the purchase of all new IV pumps house wide. Our nurses try to run EVERYTHING via pump. Understandable from safety perspective but not sure it's affordable. Is using pumps for all infusions becoming standard practice?
See the Infusion Nursing Standards of Practice, #33 Flow Control Devices. There is nothing there that states pumps shall or even should be used on all patients. I think this has become common practice for nursing convenience also driven by the patient safety movement, but this is not a standard of practice.
