I know from my own clinical practice and by reading this site that we are not to advance an existing PICC. The rationale of normal organisms on the skin surface that adhere to the material of the PICC will be introduced into the blood stream makes logical sense. Over the years I have seen people on here state that this is written in "the Standards". Maybe I am missing something, but I cannot find this stated in the Standards of Practice. Are there other studies out there that state this? Any help would be much appreciated.
Read the INS Standards of Practice, Standard 53. P. on page S73. It states it very clearly that the nurse should not advance catheters that have been in contact with skin.
