Administering Cathflo in the home

I am working with a palliative patient in his home as a private nurse, because there is no home IV program in my community. I am administering meds through a PICC and would like to avoid having to send him to ER in the event of an occlusion and Cathflo is required. I am very experienced in administering Cathflo but would like to know if it is an an accepted and safe practice to administer Cathflo in the home setting. I have a Physician who is willing to write an order for this. Thank you very much

As long as you are meeting

As long as you are meeting the INS Standards of Practice, this procedure for clearing occlusions in any CVAD can be done in the home. Lynn

As the Infusion Specialist

As the Infusion Specialist for a Home Infusion company, and also having done in-services for Genentech, I can tell you it is absolutely safe to use in the home patient. Just be sure to let it dwell for at least 30 min before your initial check. I have had some nurses rush it and it was often times unsuccessful (at that check) and they still had to wait for the time.
