ACTH test and drawing off PIV

Hello- I have had the question posed to me about drawing off a NEW peripheral IV for the ACTH test.  The reason being is the pt will have to have at least 4 sticks if they do not draw off the line. Our policy is no PIV blood draws unless in an emergent situation or hemodynamically unstable.  Can you let me know what you all are doing in your outpt clinics.  Thanks!

I don't think there are any specific studies about this test begin drawn from a PIV, however the 2011 Infusion Nurisng Standards of Practice contained more information about the safetly of using PIVs for lab draws. See the standard on Phlebotomy. Lynn

In my outpatient setting, we do draw our labs with the PIV start, and have not had any problems. We are currently using the Nexiva catheter which allows us to draw specimens without any blood exposure to the nurse.  Hope this helps
