Greetings.....and Happy Monday!
I'm looking for evidence based info regarding NON-use of circumferential dressings to stabilize IV sites. I'm teaching against (concerned about impedement of venous return and risk of clots) it but can't find much in the literature. 'Infusion Nursing, an Evidence Based Approach' says, the device should not 'impede vascular circulation or the delivery of the prescribed therapy' (pg 214). I was looking for something which addressed the issue of clot formation during slowed flow.
Thanks.......

Are you asking about what I refer to as roller bandages like Kling, Kerlix, etc? There is documentation in the literature about those. Reasons to avoid using
1. obscures insertion site so that complications can not easily be seen
2. when infiltration does occur, edema will cause this bandage to become essentially a tourniquet
Those are the primary reasons, but can't quote a single study. I don't think you will find anything related to these bandages causing thrombus formation. Lynn

Thanks, Lynn. My thought was that if you slow venous return there is a greater risk of clot formation in the limb.

That makes sense, but just don't think it is in the literature. Lynn
