My hospital is a little behind with the use of Maxium barriers with picc placement, we are now looking at different drapes and of course cost. Our IV nurses place picc lines by themselves. We use the full picc trays from bard. We currently use only the drapes that come in the kit. I am trying to figure out how to get the drape under the arm and the full drape over the bed and when to put on the sterile gown and how to maintain being sterile..Any suggestion on how everybody does there set up. Order things are placed, or is there any references I can go to. If you understand what I"m asking, thanks in advance for suggestions.
There are manufacturers who make a maximum barrier PICC kit. All items are placed in the kit in the proper order that they are used, and everything is there, to make your life at the bedside easier.
You can either chloroprep the patient first, or after you put on your sterile garb.
Put on cap and mask, open kit.
Put on sterile gown and sterile gloves, if you chloroprep is in the kit, you can use it now or drop it onto your field and use it.
Then open the drape. If you have a one piece drape, fold it in half (the fenestration in half) and center over PICC site, then open to the left, right, up over the head then down over the feet. If a two piece, then place the full body drape first, again left, right, up then down then open the arm drape, starting over the site.
You may want to ask your product manufacturer for clinical support to come in and work with you, many manufacturers do this as part of their support.

Thank you chris
We use the drapes in the kit after prepping. Then we add a very large drape to extend the sterile area from head to toe, but not fenestrated. So it overlaps the kit drapes.
Hope this makes sense.

Nancy,
I agree with Chris Cavanaugh, contact the rep, in your case a Bard Rep and request a visit from your area Clinical Specialist. Bard Access Systems has doubled the number of Clinical Specialist's now available for education/training, I believe you will find it beneficial to have someone at the bedside working through your concerns side by side.
Hope this helps,

Hey Tim how much does Bard pay you to post on this site??

I agree with Tim and Chris - whether you're using Bard or Arrow (some of the other clinical specialists that post on this site) or Med Comp or Boston Scientific; it sounds like you could use a few days of working with your vendor's Clinical Specialists - they're there to help you and your patients.

Eric,
Please do not interpret this as rude but I am respectfully going to ignore your question. My time is limited and will only answer relevant questions pertaining to vascular access. You must agree as evidenced by not answering me who you work for. Arrow? Navilyst? Medcomp? Angiodynamics?

Tim what is rude is you using this forum as a continuing billboard for Bard.

Please get over it and quit posting your jabs on the site. Save it for relevant responses. I, for one, am tired of seeing them.
thanks in advance, if you can contain yourself

I must agree with Sharon, I too was tired of seeing BARD on all posts, but in this case a BARD response is relevant to the question. Nancy - who uses BARD - asked the question and therefore got an appropriate response from Tim.
I think a lot of the sarcasm has disappeared from BARD, but Eric I must say you are more than making up for that. Please remember what your Mother taught you as a child - if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it i.e. keep your sarcastic comments to yourself. Oh, and no I do not work for BARD nor do I use their products I am a very happy and satisfied Angiodynamics customer who comes to this site for tips and tricks to the business, not to read ugly comments.
Thanks.
