I am looking for current data re: the use of anticoagulants to prevent thrombosis in patients with CVADs. Back in 07, Lynn Hadaway mentioned a study (Systemic Anticoagulant Prophylaxis for Central Catheter–Associated Venous Thrombosis in Cancer Patients) that concluded that "current studies do not support the routine us of anticoagulants to prevent CVAD-related thrombosis"
Does anyone have any current studies/information?

New article in the latest JPEN:
The incidence of PICC line-associated thrombosis with and without the use of prophylactic anticoagulants. Paauw,JD et al. JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr. 2008 Jul-Aug;32(4):443-7
The study sample size was small but the authors found a decreased incidence of thrombi in patients receiving anticoagulation.

This is an area of special interest to me as well.
I just opened my new Journal of Infusion Nursing July/August 2008 Issue and there is an article called "Central Venous Catheter-Related Thrombosis - A systematic Review" by Nicholas Yacopetti, MN.
It is very well written and comprehensive in that "the purpose of the article is to offer a review of the literature, investigate the pathophysiology of the condition, and summarizes the key points"

Thanks Raquel! I did read the article and it was very well written and informative. It certainly has given me a great start with all of the articles in his reference list. As far as I know, current studies are still undecided whether anticoagulant therapy is of true benefit. Hopefully the information from this article will give me more specific answers and studies to look at.

This is a new product there using in Europe, which seems to address several problems with CVADs we are all familiar with: DVTs and Infection. From what I've read, they're having good results with it. It would be great to try if it ever makes its way here. Phil Niemiec RN, Wyandotte Hospital MI

Taurolock sounds like taurolidine, an amino acid that is being studied as a catheter locking solution. There are numerous types of solutions now making their way through development and the FDA processes. These solutions are being used in Europe and UK but none are commercially available in the US yet. Some are using these alternative solutions in the US but they are obtaining them from local compounding pharmacies. These solutions would address catheter lumen occlusion from intraluminal thrombotic causes but not DVT inside the vein around the catheter. All the available published studies on these solutions were included in Webinar 3 of the series I did for INS on Catheter Patency.
