Agency PICC placement

Does anyone place PICCs independtly, as an agency nurse? How much do you charge per PICC, or what do you get paid per PICC? Do you bring all your supplies and ultrasound, or does the instution supply them?

You can charge any amount.

You can charge any amount. Payment depends on the payor.

Hospitals may charge $ 600-1200 per PICC insertion. But, if a nurse insert a PICC for a hospitalized patient, rehab unit or skilled facility there is no additional income for the facility. It is part of the DRG payment. Some insurance companies pay $150.00 per insertion. CPT code is the same with or with out ultrasound.  Facilities are trying to save or cut the cost of care by hiring independent contractors.

I tried it. But, it did not work out for me. They want you there NOW/STAT. I was promised $200.00 per insertion. But, it took 3-6 months to get the payment, if it happened. I was contracted with 2 facilities. both told be that I have to wait for the public aid payment.  There are successful independent contractors who insert PICCs.  They work 7 days a week 12-14 hr days. Ask a lawyer to review the contract. Add terms for interest for payment over 30 days.

Good Luck

I just thought I would pass

I just thought I would pass this along for what it is worth. I was invited to monitor a listserv for legal nurse consultants because of my expert witness work. There is always lots of discussion on that site about **never** discussing fees for any service they provide because it could be construed as price-fixing. I am not sure how this concern applies to the infusion world, just thought I would pass on their concern over this. No fees of any kind can every be discussed on that listserv, but you can provide the process for how one might arrive at a fee or how you calculate your fees. Just not your actual fees.

Thank you Lynn for the information. I have seen fee schedule over the internet for PICC classes. Is that the same?

Do you mean for the

Do you mean for the individual registration fee for attending a PICC insertion course? If so, that would not be the same. My understanding is this applies to consulting fees for various services.
